The VA pension is a benefit that’s available to any veteran or spouse of a veteran who served on active duty in the military for at least 90 days with at least one day during a time of conflict. In addition to the service requirements, a veteran must be age 65 or older and meet a means test.
This benefit is ideally suited for veterans that are:
- Low income. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’re broke. It could mean that your net income is low due to high out-of-pocket medical expenses.
- A housebound veteran or spouse.
- A veteran or spouse in a nursing home.
There is also a means test that looks at a veteran’s family income and assets. Many veterans falsely assume that they will not qualify.
